As a family we are Slurpee / Slushy fiends. Especially during the scorching summer months. When we first got the idea of slushies at home, we tired our blender first. No luck there- it could hardly function, let alone crush ice the way we needed it to. From there, we went on to an electric "Ice Shaver". All that one did was make a horrid sound and spit out little bits of ice chunks that melted before it could be collected. After dealing with the noise from that machine, we thought we would go more low-tech. We opted for a Jelly Belly Manual Ice Shaver. Yeah, right. I was about to give up when I mentioned to a friend of mine the difficulty we were having with finding a good machine. She then introduced me to her Hawaiian Snow Cone Machine by Hawaiian Shaved Ice! Hers was an older model, inherited from her mother at some point. It worked like a dream. I started doing research to try and track one down only to find out that the S500 model she had was discontinued. I opted... When I found out it was discontinued, I was so sad, as were other customers. This year, they brought it back, and I immediately bought one for my sister. There is simply no better design for this sort of thing. It uses any kind of ice, and any kind of bowl or other recepticle to catch the ice. I have used mine constantly for 3 summers now, and I still haven't needed to replace the blade. By constantly, I mean at least 2 to 3 huge snowcones per day for myself, plus more that my kids make. I love being able to load it up and walk away to put away the ice tray, get out flavors, or whatever, while it shaves. Worth every penny, and then some. 25 of 26 people found the following review helpful simple design and functional, This review is from: Hawaiian Snow Cone Machine - Ice Shaver #S700 This has a simple design with a removable bowl so it's easy to clean.Because the blade is under the bowl and the chute to the blade is curved, kids can use this with no danger of hurting themselves. The dispersal of the ice is wide enough that I place a bowl under it to catch the shaved ice rather than trying to drop it directly into a snow cone cup. I don't know that this would be practical for a crowd, but to make an occasional snow cone for 2 to 3 people it has been great. I found a recipe online for flavored simple syrup that costs pennies per serving. I haven't tried the bottle kind so I can't comment on it. |
